Our Practice Boundary

From 5 January 2015, GP practices in England are free to register new patients who live outside their practice boundary area. This means that you are able to join practices in more convenient locations, such as a practice near your work, closer to your child’s school or even re-join your existing practice when you move home.   However this new arrangement is voluntary for all GP practices and each Practice is able to make their own decision based on the personal arrangements for each patient application.

If we, at the practice have no capacity at the time of application, or feel it is not clinically or practically appropriate for you to be registered so far away from the Practice then we will, regrettably, refuse registration and we will explain our reasoning to you.  Reasons we give for refusing registration, or for asking patients, who have moved out of the area, to register with a new Practice, include the practicalities and clinical safety around home visits, referral decisions for hospital tests and treatment and access to community based health services.

We hope you respect the decision that is made and the reasoning behind it, as patient safety is our upmost priority.

If a patient moves residence to outside our practice boundary our practice policy is to deregister the patient.  In this circumstance the following will apply:

  • The patient will remain registered with the practice for 30 days after notification to PCSE that they are being deregistered
  • After 30 days the patient will be deregistered, or, this will occur in a lesser time if the patient registers with another GP Practice, which will trigger deregistration
  • The Practice will remain responsible for continuing to deliver primary medical services but will not provide a home visiting service.

Our LMC recommends that we advise you of these arrangements as our CCG may not have commissioned an in-hours home visiting service for you to access.  The only reliable way to secure access to a home visiting service is to re-register promptly with another local GP Practice
